High-precision 5G whitebox solutions make COTS-based open virtual RAN viable
Work by organizations like the O-RAN Alliance and Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is now resulting in specifications for both open interfaces and whitebox implementations that can address the performance requirements of 5G RAN both now and in the future.
Silicom vRAN solutions relied on X86 hardware and SmartNIC cards. At Silicom we have built Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware based on standard Xeon CPUs and standard Ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs) as well as capability for time synchronization and full/partial 4G/5G High-Phy offload.
One area that has been improved significantly in Silicom DU appliance implementations is time synchronization. More stringent requirements for end-to-end latency and increased antenna and base station density means that timing synchronization and accuracy has become a critical capability that has now been fully available on Silicom hardware.
