Introduction to Silicom IS Switch Series Based on Marvell® Falcon Prestera®
The Silicom IS12800 IS Switch, powered by Marvell® Falcon Prestera® silicon, represents a significant advancement in networking technology. The Silicom IS12800 IS switch is designed to deliver high performance, flexibility, and scalability, making it ideal for modern data centers and enterprise networks.
The key features of the IS Switch series include support SONiC, up to 400 Gbps, RoCE V2, and modularity that allows for the swapping of switchboards and front I/O.
The Future of Networking
Disaggregation, the decoupling of hardware and software, is increasingly recognized as the future of networking. This approach allows customers to select the best hardware and software independently, fostering rapid innovation by separating their development paths. Initially popularized in server virtualization, disaggregation is now being adapted to storage and networking technologies.
In networking, disaggregation enables any network operating system (NOS) to integrate with any switch silicon. Open-source standards like ONIE (Open Network Install Environment) facilitate the loading and installation of any NOS during the boot process.

SONiC: The Linux of Networking OS
SONiC (Software for Open Networking in Cloud) is gaining traction as the preferred open-source cloud-scale NOS. Gartner predicts that by 2025, 40% of organizations operating large data center networks will run SONiC in production environments. This prediction is based on the growing customer interest and the expanding commercial ecosystem around SONiC.
As a community-driven NOS with a silicon-agnostic Switch Abstraction Interface (SAI), SONiC levels the playing field for NOS. The SAI allows for the rapid introduction of new switch silicon, providing a choice of open, disaggregated networking hardware to the NOS, similar to how Linux revolutionized server infrastructure.
Marvell’s Commitment to SAI/SONiC
Marvell is committed to supporting SONiC and SAI across its data center switch portfolio.
